Summer 2026 has been our busiest residential dispatch season since 2022. The Huntsville and Madison housing markets are still moving — new construction in Clift Farm and Town Madison, resales across Hampton Cove, and the steady trickle of military and Redstone Arsenal moves that arrive every spring. And almost every new homeowner is calling us with the same question:

> “Should I rekey my locks before I move in?”

The answer is yes, and here is why we have been saying it more loudly this summer than usual.

## Builder-Grade Locks Have a Trust Problem

If you just bought a newly built home in Madison, Harvest, or Meridianville, the cylinders that came with the house are almost certainly **Grade 3 builder hardware** — the cheapest tier that meets code. That alone is not the security problem (it can be upgraded later). The trust problem is this: by the time the deed transfers, somewhere between 10 and 30 people have had keys to your front door at some point during construction.

- The framing crew
- The electrician’s apprentice
- The painters
- The HVAC installers
- The flooring sub
- The walk-through inspector
- The realtor’s lockbox key
- The previous showing visitors

Not all of them kept copies. But you have no way to know who did.

A rekey solves it in one visit. We pull the existing cylinder, change the pin stack, and cut new keys for you. **Every old builder key, agent key, and contractor key stops working the second we put the cylinder back in.**

## Why Rekey Beats Replace (for Most People)

When a new homeowner calls, the second question is almost always: “shouldn’t I just buy new locks?” Sometimes — but usually not.

**Rekey if your existing hardware is in good shape and fits your door correctly.** It is faster, cheaper, and reuses the locks you already paid for in the closing price. For more on the choice, see

lock rekeying vs changing the locks

[/guide/lock-rekeying-vs-changing-the-locks/ →](/guide/lock-rekeying-vs-changing-the-locks/)

.

**Replace if** your locks are worn, mismatched, builder-grade Grade 3 hardware you want to upgrade to Grade 1, or you simply prefer a different finish or style. Replacing also makes sense if you are adding smart locks to the entry doors.

For most Madison and Hampton Cove buyers we visit, the right plan is: rekey every exterior door cylinder now, schedule a deadbolt upgrade for the front and garage entry doors in a second visit when the budget allows.

## The 30-Minute Move-In Security Visit

Here’s what a typical rekey visit looks like in summer 2026:

1. **Walk the doors.** We count exterior cylinders. Most homes have 2 to 5 — front, back, garage entry, sometimes a basement walk-out.
2. **Match the keying.** If you’d like every door to open with the same key, we key them all alike. Some customers prefer one key for the front and a separate key for the back so the lawn crew never has interior access.
3. **Rekey on-site.** Cylinders come out, pins change, cylinders go back. Typically 5 to 8 minutes per door.
4. **Hand off three keys.** Three is the standard — one main, one spare, one for a trusted neighbor or relative.

Total visit time: about 45 minutes for a 4-door home.

## What Else We Look At During Move-In Visits

While we are there, we also flag anything that is going to be a problem:

- **Worn strike plates** with short screws. We swap to 3-inch screws and reinforced plates so a kick-in does not split the jamb. See

    door and jamb reinforcement

    [/guide/door-and-jamb-reinforcement-to-prevent-break-ins/ →](/guide/door-and-jamb-reinforcement-to-prevent-break-ins/)

    .
- **Mismatched or worn cylinders.** Sometimes one of the four doors has a worn cylinder that will fail in a year. Better to swap it now than have a service call later.
- **Old key codes etched into the cylinder face.** Some builder cylinders ship with the bitting code stamped on the plug. We swap those out — anyone reading that code can have a key cut.
- **Smart lock candidates.** If a door has the right prep and you want one, we can install a smart deadbolt the same day.

## A Word About Scams

Summer brings the bait-and-switch crowd to Northern Alabama. We are seeing more flyers, more “lowest price guaranteed” ads with no business name, and more cash-only crews showing up in unmarked vehicles. Always verify

AESBL licensing

before you let anyone touch your locks — and watch for a real local address, a marked vehicle, and consistent reviews.

We have been the licensed, bonded, and insured local team since 2005. If a quote sounds way below ours, it is worth a second look.
