# How We Saved a Madison Driver $200 on a Transponder Car Key | Huntsville Locksmiths Blog > A Madison driver faced a steep dealership quote for a lost transponder key. The dealership had quoted her **$420 for a single replacement transponder key, plus a $90 tow**. She wanted a second opinion. This is the kind of call we take three or four times a week, and almost every time we save the driver real money. Here is exactly how this one went. ## The Quote on the Phone When she called, we asked for the year, make, and model. With a 2018 mid-size SUV, the transponder key is a remote-head key — a metal blade with a chip embedded in the head and a remote built in. Almost every car-key locksmith in Northern Alabama can cut and program these on-site. We gave her a phone estimate, including a second spare cut at the same visit (it is far cheaper to cut a second key during one trip than to schedule it later).
